North Mississippi All Stars by Bluesman
(Washington DC) If you're looking for a good show in the D.C. area , you may want to check out the North Mississippi All Stars at the State Theatre in Falls Church , Virginia . They will be the feature band there on February 27 , 2010 .
The All Stars are a blues/rock band formed in 1966 in Hernando , Mississippi . They won the W.C. Handy award in 2001 for "Best New Atist Debut" , and their first CD release "Shake Hands With Shorty" was nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Contemporary Blues Album." Future CD's also received Grammy nominations . Members of the band have worked with John Hiatt and Robert Randolph , and Luther Dickinson now also plays lead guitar for the great Black Crowes . Cody Dickinson (drums/keyboards) and Chris Chew (Bass Guitar) also have side projects as well as being regular members of the All Stars .
Chris Chew looks like a lineman for the Dallas Cowboys , and gives the band a great funky/blues sound . His bass looks like a toy in his hands , but who's going to tell him anything . Luther Dickinson is an excellent guitarist who also lends his hand to the Black Crowes , and Cody Dickinson (Luther's brother) is a more than capable drummer to give the band the backing it needs . The band is highly respected in the Blues world , but seems to be relatively "unknown" in the main stream music scene . That seems to be a problem in the Blues world , but, this also allows us to see these great artists in smaller venues like the State Theatre .
I admit that I didnt know a lot about the All Stars at first , but one day I heard one of their tunes on Satellite radio and I decided to check them out more on YouTube . I discovered more tunes from them and became an instant fan of their music . Check out the Live version of "Shake" performed on one of those Night time talk shows . There are some great amateur videos on YouTube of Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes jamming with Luther , and I even found some with Luther jamming with the Allman Brothers . While these videos give you a taste of what the All Stars are about , nothing beats seeing them play LIVE .
