Jimmie Vaughan Live in NYC - by J. Blake

(New York, NY)
Last week, New York City blues fans were graced with the presence of Mr. Jimmie Vaughan, as he brought down the house at B.B. King’s Blues Club & Grill in the heart of Time Square on Wednesday May 19th, 2010. Members of the sold-out crowd reveled in a buffet of tasty Texas-style guitar, as Vaughan put his personal stamp on everything from sizzling blues and jumping swing to modern classics and good ol’ fashion rock ‘n’ roll.
The guitar-slinger’s current stint on the road is in promotion of his first solo album in nine years, the aptly titled, JIMMIE VAUGHAN PLAYS BLUES, BALLADS & FAVORITES; due out on July 6th, 2010. This latest studio effort pays tribute to the artists and songs that have inspired Vaughan and his music, making even the night’s “new” material feel familiar and wonderfully weathered.
With a little help from saxophonist Greg Piccalo and longtime Vaughan Brothers collaborator/singer Lou Anne Barton, The Tilt-A-Whirl Band and their fearless leader ran through personal hits, like “Extra Jimmies” and “Boom-Bapa-Boom” as well as semi-rare gems from artists that included Lonnie Brooks, Jimmy Reed, Buddy Guy, Johnny Ace, swing-king Bill Eckstine and 'The King' himself…Elvis Presley. The evening came to a close as Vaughan paid tribute to his legendary/late brother, with a touching solo rendition of “Six Strings Down” and a fierce (full band) encore of Stevie Ray’s classic, “Texas Flood”.
All in all, it was a very entertaining night of music and blues fans should make an effort to check out Jimmie Vaughan and The Tilt-A-Whirl Band as they embark on their world tour; promoting what promises to be a fun and nostalgic new album. Also worth mentioning, is the evening’s opening act; a beautifully raucous blues-rock trio from Kansas named Moreland & Arbuckle. They’re a small band with a huge sound and they’re latest album, FLOOD, is available now. Check them out.

Check out this video of Jimmie Vaughan, Eric Clapton and Robert Randolph performing "Six Strings Down". Please excuse all the crazy video effects, it's a great performance...so stick with it.
