Blues Cruise by Monica Yasher in Pittsburgh, PA

Posted on 7/24/2009 by Monica Yasher

Imagine a place where you could drink under the sun and listen to blues music all day. A blues festival day after day after day with the likes of Susan Tedeschi, Buckwheat Zydeco, Tommy Castro, and Coco Montoya. A place where you wouldn’t have to worry about driving back home ‘cause all you would have to do is stagger back to your bed; and, that feelin’ you get when you drink too much would truly be due to….Ah-it’s a blues cruise!

I talked to my psychic just last week and she told me that I would be going on a cruise. I laughed. I mean, I really don't believe these things! Then I started looking at cruises and I found the one just for moi! Could she really be right? And, just about now, all of you are asking, is Monica really all right? She talks to a psychic! I think I’m supposed to write a number one country song done by Alan Jackson too! (Ladies, remember that black and white video he had a long time ago? Wasn't he absolutely dreamy?) I better start pitching that song I have for him!

I mean, I’m trying to understand my purpose in life and live it. When you get down to it, aren’t we all? So you have to start somewhere. So why not with a cruise suggested by someone who thinks they can see into the future! Is that my purpose? To cruise through life? And, better yet, a blues cruise! Now, do you think I'm crazy? Psychics, purpose of life, blues cruise. It's amazing how life just connects the dots.

Reality sets in about here. Sadly, it looks like I’m not going anywhere this year. The 2009 cruise is booked….and the 2010 cruise is booked. So, I will head out to my backyard with my strawberry margarita and put my painted red toes in the kid’s wading pool this hot July weekend. I’ll have WYEP 91.3 on in Pittsburgh starting at 5 pm and listen to BumbleBee Slim’s blues program all night long. BTW-internet accessible!

Then, I’ll close my eyes and pretend. Pretend I never talked to a physic. Pretend that I’m on a big cruise ship. I’ll pretend that I am part of the pro jam bands. I’ll pretend that I got really excited when the secret guests were announced. I’ll pretend that I am there to see the artist spotlights. I’ll pretend that I am at Mardi gras on pretend night! I think pretend night could get me in trouble…but.... I won’t go there.

You know maybe it is a good thing both of these cruises are booked solid. Maybe I’m meant to get a whole bunch more interviews under my belt and be invited as an industry panel member discussing all the neat blues people I have met-next year. I love pretending! (Really guys-I've interviewed NRPS and Jace Everett! I have commitments for interviews from GE Smith, Shannon Curfman, and Chris Smither in the next month! Not bad for doing this for only 3 months!)

And, the sites on a blues cruise. The islands. The shopping. I went to the Caribbean on my honeymoon, which was 22 years ago. I can tell you that the water is really blue. It isn’t like the Atlantic here in the North-brown or gray. It is a beautiful blue. I hope I get to see that again in my life. Blue water with blues music. It just sounds sooooo right, huh?

Surely physics are correct, right? Can someone make this happen? Do you think I could really go? Do you know my birthday is in January? That January 2010 trip would be a great present! So, as Susan Tedeschi says, somebody, anybody pleeeeassssse Wait for Me! I have to go now. The kids are screamin’ they want the pool. Or, should I pretend that I just don’t hear them and crank up the volume on my radio dial! Oh, Wait for Me!
