The Steve Miller Band's Bingo!, CD Review - by J. Blake

(New York, NY)
This summer Steve Miller delivered his first studio effort in 17 years and with it he has decided to pay tribute to his blues and R&B roots. BINGO! may feature compositions from such notable blues greats as B.B. King, Lowell Fulson, Otis Rush, Howlin’ Wolf, Earl King, Jimmy Reed and Jimmy Vaughan, but it is far from a copycat blues-tribute. From signature harmonies and guitar-style to production quality, BINGO! feels and sounds very much like a “Steve Miller” album.
Look, is he attempting to redesign the wheel here? No not at all. In fact I’d go as far as to say he’s not even really challenging himself too much musically, but with the help of artists like Joe Satriani, Sonny Charles, Kenny Lee Lewis and (the now late) Norton Buffalo, Miller has put his own recognizable musical stamp on a collection of familiar blues standards and contemporary blues covers; miraculously making often recycled material feel fresh and at times even new. Tracks like Hey Yeah, Who’s Been Talkin’, Rock Me Baby (featuring Joe Satriani), Come On (Let The Good Times Roll) and All Your Love (I Miss Loving) sizzle with shades of Hendrix and Stevie Ray, without ever crossing over into rip-off territory. .
Ultimately, BINGO! is a solid piece of contemporary blues that highlights Miller’s guitar chops and shows off his prowess as an arranger and producer. Though his rock sensibilities may boil to the surface at times, they never become overpowering or get in the way of the album’s apparent goal…to deliver a collection of fun, toe-tapping, head-bobbing blues. It’s definitely worth checking out.
