Blues Harp Blowout by Nelson Onofre
OK, my fellow Blues lovers, this week I am featuring photos from Mark Hummel's Blues Harmonica Blowout which was held at the BB King Blues Club in New York on April 19, 2010. This is a series that started back in 1991 and has gone on to become quite a big deal, showcasing some of the top harmonica players around. This edition of the blowout featured Magic Dick, harmonica player extraordinaire from the J. Geils Band, Sugar Ray Norcia, Dennis Gruenling and Steve Guyger.
I was particularly excited to have the chance to see and hear Magic Dick once again. The only time I saw him perform was with the J. Geils Band and that was maybe in the 70s at a show in New York's Central Park. That was also the same place I got to first hear James Cotton right around the same time. At that time I think the tickets were less than five dollars. Imagine that!
I had already seen Dennis Gruenling at a past Blues Harmonica Blowout and he is always entertaining. I've also seen Steve Guyger perform at Terra Blues. This was my first time seeing Sugar Ray Norcia and he was quite the crowd pleaser. Some of you may already know he was a member of Roomful of Blues in the 90s.
This is a series that is highly recommended if you're a lover of the Blues and most certainly if you're a harmonica player. This is great chance to see the cream of the crop in the Blues harp world. I'm sure Mark will be back at BB King's next year with another crop of top players. I will be featuring some more photos from the show next week as well so I guess this can be considered Part 1.
