Pat Travers by Nelson Onofre

Welcome back Blues fans! This week I am featuring photos of guitarist Pat Travers, another in a long line of rockers who have been heavily influenced by the Blues.
I first got into Pat's music back in the late 70s and saw him during the Black Pearl tour. I kind of lost track of Pat for a while but when I saw he was going to be playing BB King's on a bill with Rick Derringer I knew I had to be there. I'm a fan of what I consider to be the classic Travers lineup of Travers, Pat Thrall on guitar, Mars Cowling on bass and the amazing Tommy Aldridge on drums.

Pat's new band consists of Kirk McKim on guitar, Rodney O'Quinn on bass and Sean Shannon on drums. Pat and the band rocked BB's for almost 90 minutes, playing songs from his new CD, Fidelis, along with some of the Travers classics like Heat in The Street, Snortin' Whiskey, Crash and Burn and he had legendary drummer Carmine Appice join him on Boom Boom, Out Go The Lights.

We know Travers can rock but I suggest checking out some of his Blues releases such as Travelin' Blues, Blues Tracks, Blues Tracks, Vol. 2, Best of the Blues Plus Live, Whiskey Blues, and Blues Magnet. It took a while but I finally caught up with Pat again and as expected, he put on a great show.

Ruthie Foster by Nelson Onofre

Welcome back Blues fans! I recently caught Ruthie Foster at Joe's Pub in New York so I have posted some photos from that show. I had seen Ruthie before, a brief set opening for Robben Ford sometime last year. When I saw she was again playing in New York I knew I had to go catch a full set. I'm fairly new to catching shows at Joe's Pub but it's another great place to catch some live music.
Ruthie and the band were in fine form and the appreciative crowd loved what they heard. This is another show you should catch if it comes to a venue near you.

I would like to thank Sue Schrader for getting me on the guest list.

John Mayall by Nelson Onofre

What's up Blues fans! This week I am submitting photos of the elder statesman of British blues, Mr. John Mayall. John is also known as the Godfather of British Blues and righfully so. To anyone that's a fan of the Blues genre John needs no introduction. His career spans 50 plus years and it was his stint with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in the 60's that helped launch Eric Clapton to stardom. Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Coco Montoya, Walter Trout and Buddy Whittington have all spent time in the guitar player's chair with John. His guitarist for the Feb. 9, 2010 show that I caught was Rocky Athas and he was a crowd pleaser.

Most bands that play BB King's don't do two sets but John did and I caught the early show. The turnout was what you would expect for a bluesman of John's caliber. John sang, played harmonica, keys and guitar. The band was in fine form and lent superb support. Along with Rocky Athas rounding out the band were Greg Rzab on bass, Jay Davenport on drums and Tom Canning on keys. You can read J. Blake's review of the second set here. This was my second time catching John. Last time I caught him he had Buddy Whittington on guitar and opening that show for John was the late, great, Danny Gatton. If you like Blues and haven't seen John yet then do yourselves a favor and catch him. Even if you've seen him before, check out this living Blues legend again, you won't be disappointed.
